Mississauga Italfest's Heritage Centre and 2025 Featured Region: Sicily!
A land where ancient history meets breathtaking landscapes, Sicily is more than just Italy’s largest island—it’s a cultural treasure trove bursting with flavour, tradition, and passion. Surrounded by the shimmering waters of the Mediterranean, Sicily has been shaped by Greek, Roman, Arab, and Norman influences, making it a uniquely diverse and vibrant region.

From the majestic Mount Etna, Europe’s highest and most active volcano, to the picturesque seaside villages, Sicily offers a stunning array of natural wonders. Its cities—Palermo, Catania, and Syracuse—tell stories through grand architecture, bustling markets, and centuries-old traditions.
And let’s not forget the food! Sicilian cuisine is an irresistible fusion of Mediterranean flavors, featuring delicacies like arancini (crispy stuffed rice balls), caponata (sweet and tangy eggplant stew), and world-famous cannoli—crisp pastry shells filled with sweet ricotta.
At Mississauga Italfest, we will celebrate the essence of Sicily: its people, its art, its history, and its rich culinary heritage. Join us to experience the warmth and vibrance of Sicilian culture right here in Mississauga!

Sicily, the largest island in the Mediterranean, is a crossroad of cultures for over 3,000 years with a history reflected in its diverse architecture, cuisine and ancient ruins such as the Necropolis of Pantalica, the Valley of the Temples and Selinunte. Sicily’s triangular shape earned it the name, 'Trinacria' with a symbol featuring a central head with three bent legs radiating outwards. This symbol is deeply connected to Sicily's history, culture, and mythology.
Sicily is a destination where Roman theaters and Greek temples sit near bustling food markets, with medieval towns offering a glimpse into authentic Sicilian life and stunning landscapes. Some of the most beautiful coastal towns include Cefalù and Castellammare del Golfo. Its most prominent landmark, Mount Etna, is the tallest active volcano in Europe, and one of the most active in the world.
One of the largest transplantations of a Sicilian population occurred in Hamilton, Ontario with over 40,000 Hamiltonians able to trace their roots to Sicily; with 30,000 to Racalmuto, the birthplace of internationally acclaimed writer Leonardo Sciascia.
